One of the joys of setting up shop is going through the permits process. I am sure anyone can go it alone, but going through the process myself, I'd recommend you get an expediter. There are a couple of benefits to getting an expediter:
1) Getting permits is what they do for a living, so they know who is working on what and who to talk to, to keep the process going.
2) They'll keep you organized with fees you have to pay, files and documents that need submitting.
3) They'll help reduce the time it takes to get a permit. (I have heard stories of people waiting 9 months to get a buildout permit -- if you have to pay rent those months, it gets ridiculously expensive.
I have personally taken a more laidback approach to this process, and have let the architects and expediter take the lead on this. If you trust your team, don't get in their way -- but always "trust and verify!"
